Gladiator II Review

Ready to re-enter the Colosseum in ancient Rome? In 2000 Gladiator was released, the historical epic won five Academy awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe. Twenty-four years later director Ridley Scott has given us a sequel - Gladiator II. Scott had a mammoth task at hand, how do you create a sequel to one of the greatest films of all time? Gladiator II is a four-star exhilarating historical epic. It fails to live up to its predecessor, but that doesn't not mean it is a bad film or even an unworthy sequel. I greatly enjoyed the cinematic experience that is Gladiator II, in all its historically epic style! Read on for my full review, there will be minor spoilers.  Set two decades after the events of Gladiator, you may expect to find a free Rome ruled by a senate that answers to the people, as was the dream of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. a Rome that Maximus fought and died to reform. However, Rome is now ruled by young and cruel twin Emperors Caracalla (Fred He...

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Rewrite

It's time for my next rewrite and this time I have decided to re-imagine the Star Wars Sequel trilogy. Last time I rewrote Shrek 3 and 4 - check it out HERE. I really enjoyed sharing my ideas, so I thought I would give it another go. I feel incredibly brave sharing my Star Wars rewrite because the Star Wars fan base can be very opinionated so I fully understand that my rewrites will not be to everyone's taste. But I really hope you like my changes. I will be making a few minor changes to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and then some major changes to Star Wars: The Last Jedi and minor changes to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I should quickly point out that I actually really loved the sequel trilogy overall, so - this post is just going to focus on changes I would make rather than be a negative Star Wars bashing post, anything I do not mention or change will stay the same. So, let's get to it:

Star Wars Episode Seven - The Force Awakens

- There is not really anything major I would change with TFA. There are a few minor changes which I will outline. But overall, I think TFA is a good first movie, it forms a foundation, laying seeds for the rest of the trilogy.

-Instead of The Resistance I would have had the New Republic vs the First Order. But they would not have an army.
- The only scene I would remove is the scene near the start where a Steel Pecker (bird) pecks - I just really have a thing against this scene, it was over the top world building and it just pulls me out of the movie.

- I would add some sort of hint that Jedi Luke had potentially trained were around and in hiding but separate and weapon less. These Jedi would have been part of the New Republic and would have acted as protectors.

Star Wars Episode Eight - The Last Jedi

- I'm sorry TLJ fans but I am going to take most of this film apart. It's not because I hate the film but because I want to create a liner narrative. Check out my The Last Jedi Review by CLICKING HERE!

- Firstly, I would have Luke take the lightsaber and keep it. He is disillusioned with the Jedi way and refuses to train Rey. I would cut the day to day Luke activity scenes as they are just filler. I would instead focus on the reveal of Hans death and R2-D2 playing the Leia recording, both of which would prompt Luke to begin training Rey. This would happen within the first 1/4 of the film.
- During Rey's training, Luke tells her the story of his father, the Jedi and their downfall. He shows her the Jedi Texts and teaches her about the origins of the force and balance. From this point the Rey and Kylo connections will begin.

- Rey will still enter the Blow hole which is a source of dark side energy. Here she will have the vision of herself, this will mirror the Clone mentions happening elsewhere in the film. However, this is where Rey will get the dark vision of herself as dark Rey! One of the reflections will step out of line welding the double bladed red lightsaber. They would fight and Rey would eventually be pushed out.

- After this, Luke will despair and finally tell Rey about Kylo-Ren and his turn. Rey and Kylo will then have their hand hold connection and Luke will interrupt. Rey and Luke argue, and Rey will leave.

- Whilst this is happening, we will also get scenes of Kylo-Ren who has been training with Snoke. He will order the Knights of Ren (who are some of the force users Luke was training) to join him as he prepares to crush the Rebellion.
- The Rebellion spend the majority of the film trying to gain forces and gain intelligence. Finn after waking at the rebel base will be sent on an intelligence mission to the planet Pillo by Leia. Leia will be a central part of the film. On the Mission Finn will meet Jannah (and her people) and they will connect over their history as storm troopers. On Pillo (those of you that play Battlefront 2 will be familiar with this planet) Finn and Jannah will break into Palpatine's observatory to gather intel for Leia. What they find is a experimental lab, with test chambers and tubes. Finn finds plans but does not know what they mean so he grabs them to take back to Leia. Phasma is on the trail of Finn the whole time, they fight and Finn escapes. Phasma is later killed by the Knights of Ren because she has gone rogue.

- Leia at the rebel base on D'Qar will get word that the First Order is about to know their location, Poe strongly votes to fight but Leia tells him that they must move to a strong hold, they mobilise to Crait. Their forces are however weak due to the air assault at the start of the film (keeping TLJ opening). In space they face a small First order fleet and more losses occur. Poe leads a small force in a fight, and I would work in the Holdo Manoeuvre here as well as that was a very cool visual.

- The Rey/Kylo interaction and team up would remain the same, but Snoke would hint that Kylo had been manipulated.
- Finn and Jannah travel to the co-ordinates the rebellion has sent out. There the rebellion prepares for battle. Finn gives the plans to Leia who looks grave - she explains that The Republic and The Empire used to have a clone army created on Kamino (A planet she knows was destroyed years ago).

- Kylo-Ren's forces arrive on Crait and begin to fire, the defence shield of the base will not close and we get to see Leia use the force to stop a plasma shot (like Kylo in TFA) and to close the shield.

- The battle then goes very similar to TLJ but with more walkers and x-wings. Finn is not in the battle he is with Leia. Leia senses Kylo and he senses her - it makes him unsteady and his already cracking resolve cracks further until Luke arrives.

- The film will end with the rebels escaping and Kylo walking into the base. Kylo, the rebels and the Galaxy will then hear the broadcast from Palpatine.

- The film will end with the final order ships being mobilised.

Star Wars Episode Nine - The Rise of Skywalker

- I am again going to make some changes here, but a lot of the changes I make will be based on events of the film rather than changing major plot points. Check out my The Rise of Skywalker review by CLICKING HERE!

- The film will start with a time jump. A lot of the planets in the galaxy now have a Final Order ship looming above - the Galaxy will be in a state of terror.

- Kylo and the Knights of Ren will be hunting the Sith Holocron on Mustafar, Kylo will travel to Darth Vaders Castle and enter alone. Here he will find the Sith Holocron. He will find the necklace that Anakin once gave Padme - touching it he would hear the voices of Anakin and Padme. He will then travel to Exegol and this will remain as it is, but we will see cracks in his facade.
- Rey will be training with Leia and much of the opening will remain the same. Rey struggles with not being connected to the Jedi and will travel to the ruined Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Here she once again hears the voices of Obi-Wan (similar to TFA).

- The film will then progress in the same way with some minor changes.

- Ben would live and him and Rey would begin a new force order. I would have Ben heal Rey with the help of the force ghosts - I feel this would be more epic and force heeling would have a little more depth.

- R2-D2 would restore C-3PO's full memories.

- We would see the force ghosts that talk to Rey and Anakin would talk to Ben at some point.

- I would rework the Sith knife as I just feel that was a little rushed and the whole sandpit scene was a little thrown together.

- The space battle will take place all over the Galaxy so we would get to see a huge number of planets.

So there you have it! I will most likely be constantly updating this post as I work out the narratives more. If you like this post, please let me know and I will expand each of my ideas into something a little more visual.

Thank you for reading xx

P.S. If anyone from Lucasfilm or Disney or knows anyone from Disney or Lucasfilm I am actually writing my own original Star Wars trilogy scripts!! And I think you'll like them...

  3. One thing that annoyed me about TRoS was how it handled Palpatine's return, so I agree with your idea that TLJ should've ended on his broadcast and the Final Order being readied. Hell, I would've had a subplot in TLJ be that the Resistance and the First Order intercept an encrypted transmission and both sides spend a lot of the film trying to decipher it.

To be honest your rewrite barely covered any of the problems. Sure it did cover a few, but you did not explain much of anything at all
